Eddie napped when Gabe slipped into the lab’s nursery. The girls were gone—probably off with Ruby and Chita. It was a nice day, after all, and Ruby had started introducing the girls and Chita to horses.

“I’ll be here for a few minutes,” he murmured to Andrea. “Take a break.”

That earned him raised brows but no questions as Andrea left. Did she know about Brandon?

“Brandon,” he whispered. “If you’re here. Did you block Joey’s digi just a little bit ago? Ruby told me you had that ability.”

Brandon shimmered into sight. “It wasn’t me. Something broke him apart before he came all the way through.”

Gabe exhaled. “No idea what it was?”

“Not at all.”

“All right. Well, then—thanks.”

Could it have been Donald’s launch of that worm? Gabe waited impatiently for Andrea’s return. He hurried to the office Donald was using.

“Justine told me what happened during Braun’s call,” Donald said, before Gabe opened his mouth. “I’ve been following my counterworm’s traces. When Joey tried to breach its defenses, it not only kicked him out but it shut down his access to this universe. Unless he has backups outside of our universe, he’s gone.” A faint grin briefly touched his lips. “I suspect there’s backups, unfortunately. I won’t guarantee it will hold against other digis or Joey permanently if he has backups, because of the speed at which their algorithms learn. But for now—it worked.”

“That’s great news.”

“No idea how long it will last,” Donald cautioned. “It gives me a very good idea about where to proceed next.”

“I’m glad to hear it. Thanks, Don. I’ll let you get back to work.”

They had something. Which was more than they had possessed before.

Now if only they could find a means to disrupt Philippe’s appearances. Gabe suspected that dealing with Philippe would be much more complicated than banishing Joey’s digi.
